Prize Winner for Children and Youth Projects

Project:  Solar Cooker Project from the Public Community College of Altötting

Contact:  EG Solar

Development Aid Organization of the Public Community College of Altötting e.V.

Prize Money:  10,000 DM

Project Description:

At the Public Community College of Altötting, around 2400 students study for a hands-on profession.  During the school year 1978/79 under the motto ‘Helping instead of Having,’ the 1st development aid activities took place for an earthquake destroyed villiage in the Andes of Peru.  Meeting the goal ofassisting people to become self-reliant, a small school was started to offer education for wood-working and farming.  Projects in Togo and Tanzania followed.

Through the contacts made, the students became aware of the problem with fuel shortages in many areas.  The alternative to fossil fuels is energy from the sun.  With the assistance of professionals, a solar cooker was developed and tested in schools and community centers in Africa and South America.  At the same time, the building of Solar Cookers and workshops in the place of use are supported, where the unemployed and students learn how to build the cookers themselves.  To increase production, these schools are teamed up with the Youth Employment Agency for Environmental Protection (JAGUS), which is an organization development by the employment agency to integrate those who have difficulties finding work back into the workplace.

In the meantime, there have been about 14,000 Solar Cookers successfully implemented in over 80 countries worldwide, with over 40 workshops in place to develop Solar Cookers in the countries of use.  A Solar Refrigeration system for food and medicine is currently being successfully tested, the goal being a similar success and widespread use.

The jury was impressed by the effectiveness and results of the Solar Cooker project being successful through several generations of students and further developed upon.  The prize was awarded in the category of Children and Youth Projects for the achievement in development aid, the ability for worldwide implementation and last but not least, the prospects it provides for unemployed youth.
